Nathaniel Hollis Rich grew up in a family of artisans learning woodworking from an early age. With a passion for music, Nathaniel built his first guitar under the guidance of his parents, while studying classical guitar performance at Weaver Academy of Performing and Visual Arts in Greensboro North Carolina. Later continuing his education at San Francisco Conservatory of music, studying with David Tanenbaum, Nathaniel chose to leave the path of performance and focus on lutherie full time.

Beyond building guitars under his own name, Nathaniel also worked for other luthiers including Gael Mckeon (upright bass specialist) and later Ervin Somogyi (guitar builder). With a love of history and craft Nathaniel focused his repair/restoration work on bass violins becoming the preferred luthier of many San Francisco Symphony musicians servicing and repairing widely respected instruments. With the knowledge he has gained in 20 years of lutherie experience Nathaniel builds and restores remarkable instruments for musicians all over the world.
